Dopamine is triggered when we are surprised by something salient, leading to a prediction error in our brain. Even if not extremely surprising, paying attention can still generate a prediction error. Positive surprises, like finding good chocolate, lead to reinforcement of behavior, while negative surprises, causing disappointment, prompt behavior change due to disenchantment.
