There were always voices in descent to her approach into the balance literacy philosophy. But those parents were sort of seen as squeaky wheels advocating for their particular children and perhaps they were asking for something that wasn't right for the general group of learners. Reading is the work of connecting letters and words to the sounds of spoken language. So that is an understanding of reading as being profoundly auditory.
