The Role of the RAS in Filtering Relevant Information

Our brain has a filter called the RAS that looks for information that confirms our beliefs. If we believe negative things about ourselves, our brain will focus on those and filter out the positive. The brain prefers familiarity and routine, so it clings to old beliefs even if they are not helpful. In the writer's case, their dog symbolized safety and support, but they put too much pressure on the dog. When they had to confront their problems, they finally had to face their true feelings.
