NOTE

Monitoring Urine Osmolality for Treating Hyponatremia

If you give fluids to a patient with hyponatremia and their urine osmolality decreases over time, it means they are on the right track. However, if the urine osmolality doesn't improve despite fluid administration, it suggests they may not be hypovolemic. By comparing urine osmolality before and after interventions, we can determine if the treatment is effective. Correcting hyponatremia involves shutting off ADH and increasing the excretion of free water, resulting in clear urine.
