After Judge Jackson's final judgment in June 7, 2000, it was decided that Microsoft must be broken up into at least two separate companies - a separate operating system company and a separate applications company. Additional provisions included Steve Balmer and Bill Gates working at different companies and divesting their shares. Microsoft's market cap dropped significantly within 12 months of the findings, coinciding with the dot-com bubble and a CEO change, leading to a 55% decline.
