Genetic Variations and Enzyme Functionality
Genetic variations in the MTHFR gene can reduce the functionality of the MTHFR enzyme. Variations like 1298 and 677 can alter the code and shape of the enzyme, affecting its performance. The function of the MTHFR enzyme is to bind with the cofactor riboflavin, but in individuals with the 677 variation, the binding affinity of riboflavin is reduced. Dr. Bruce Ames suggests that inundating the system with high amounts of riboflavin may eventually help the enzyme to perform its function.
