Tired by 2pm? Research Blames Switching Between Work Tasks
According to Sophie Leroy's 2009 research paper, it is difficult for people to transition their attention away from an unfinished task, which negatively affects their subsequent task performance. Finishing one task before switching to another is not enough to enable effective task transition. Time pressure while finishing a prior task helps disengage from the first task and contributes to higher performance on the next task. When switching between tasks, attention residue is left behind, which lowers cognitive capacity and generates fatigue until it clears out. Time pressure can help clear out attention residue. However, switching back and forth between tasks exhausts the brain, leading to tiredness and decreased ability to handle difficult tasks.
