The person being let go wants a fulfilling job where they are needed and critical to the company. To help them, you can assist in finding a place that values their skills and passion. The team feels sad because their teammate left, so it's important to let them release their emotions and share their sadness. Decision and implementation are separate, and if you let someone go kindly and actively assist them in finding their next job, you become their agent. Reach out to potential employers on their behalf and highlight their strengths. Even if the person being fired is not a great performer overall, find out what they are good at and focus on that.
