The transition to senior leadership requires a new way of thinking. A manager follows a playbook, whereas a leader writes the playbook and looks for opportunities. A successful transition requires courage, taking risks, and tackling tough problems. Unsuccessful transitions occur when leaders seek certainty and control, instead of embracing adaptability and flexibility. Leadership is a balancing act of contradictions, such as compassion and accountability, inclusivity and clear values. Leadership has become significantly harder in recent years.
