Emotions play a crucial role in impacting attentional capacity, decision making, and relationships. Emotions are intertwined with cognitive processes, influencing our ability to focus and concentrate. They can significantly affect decision-making, as shown in a study where teachers' moods led to a one to two grade difference in paper evaluations. Even though emotions have a clear impact on perception, individuals tend to deny this influence to maintain a sense of control and free will. Emotions also serve as signals to approach or avoid in relationships, demonstrated through facial expressions and interactions with others.
Dr. Marc Brackett has dedicated his life to studying emotions and to teaching us what he’s learning. In this episode, we talk about how emotional literacy — being able to recognize, name, and understand our feelings — affects everything from learning, decision-making, and creativity to relationships, health, and performance.
