The first thing to teach children and adults to become better listeners is to practice deep listening, where individuals feel truly seen and heard. It is important to avoid listening to win and rather focus on truly understanding the other person's perspective. Additionally, techniques such as understanding adult development theory, particularly the subject object theory, can help improve listening skills. Listening for what is subject and what is object in a conversation can enhance curiosity and understanding of another person's meaning. Overall, being curious and open to truly understanding the other person is the key to becoming a better listener.
