Social Connection and Heart Rate Variability
For social connection and relationships, we need to be in a parasympathetic mode, engaging our facial muscles, voice, and eyes. Play and sports are a mix of sympathetic and parasympathetic activities to stay socially connected. Increasing heart rate variability can be done through slow-paced breathing, particularly by slowing down the exhale and introducing a pause at the top of the inhale for a long, slow, quiet exhale.
