In a relationship, it is important to have a two-way street of love with mutual giving and taking. This involves clear communication, commitment, and the ability to share one's authentic self without feeling the need to perform. It is essential to peel back the curtain on one's vulnerable self and see if the partner honors that. Additionally, having a partner who creates a safe space for both positive and negative feelings, especially for those with anxiety, is crucial for providing support.
When we experience healthy love for the first time after years of unsettling, unhealthy, toxic relationships, one of the first reactions we can have is "why does this feel so boring?" Often we confuse safety with a lack of passion, or assume that just because this person doesn't activate our nervous system, we are missing the spark. This is often left over from past relationships where we have confused anxiety with excitement.
In this episode, we bring on Sarah Yudkin, the founder of You Love and You Learn to break down the relationship anxiety that comes with experiencing healthy love for the first time and how to dissect your relationship OCD, the unconscious ways we sabotage relationships and all that comes with it.
