HDL Cholesterol's Illusion of Danger

Clinical trials have demonstrated that raising HDL cholesterol does not reduce atherosclerotic events, challenging long-held beliefs from observational studies like Framingham. Adjusting for APO-B shows that low HDL cholesterol is not inherently dangerous; instead, low HDL is often a result of high triglycerides. High triglycerides correlate with elevated APO-B particles that are not effectively cleared by the liver, thus linking them to both low HDL cholesterol and increased cardiovascular risk.
