The agility of governing technology must match the agility of the technology itself. Moving towards a more agile government in relation to AI is crucial. The regulatory agency can be a vehicle for this, even though it may be an outdated model. We should focus on understanding the need for flexibility in the future, rather than defining it based on our past understanding. AI will hyper evolve and exploit any unprotected commons, so we must enhance our ability to protect. Our founding fathers were aware of such concerns.

On Monday, Oct. 30, President Biden released a sweeping executive order that addresses many risks of artificial intelligence. Tom Wheeler, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, shares his insights on the order with Tristan and Aza and discusses what’s next in the push toward AI regulation.

We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regime of their barbarous ancestors.”
