Neuroplasticity: The Ability to Change and Grow the Brain
Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to grow and change throughout our lives. It was previously believed that the brain was set in its ways once we reached adulthood. However, we now know that the brain continues to change until around age 25. If we don't actively work to change our brain, it will plateau. However, by engaging in activities that challenge our brain, such as learning a new language or instrument, we can not only gain new skills but also improve our executive functions. These activities can include traveling, cooking new recipes, reading different publications, and having conversations with diverse people. While everyday activities like doing a podcast can provide some learning, they may not induce significant neuroplasticity. Overall, actively engaging in new experiences can lead to positive changes in the brain.
