Americans demonstrate a strong family orientation, arguably more than Japanese people, despite the historical roots of family dynamics in Japan. While the American family structure may sometimes resemble a work unit, providing social connectivity, it can also lead to feelings of entrapment. In contrast, societal changes and corporate influence have eroded traditional family ties in Japan. Nevertheless, Americans maintain a notable degree of communication and connection with their family members throughout their lives.

The universe, points out economist Noah Smith, is always trying to kill us, whether through asteroids hurtling through space or our every-few-hours hunger pains. Why, then, should we expect anything but a gravitational pull toward poverty?
