NOTE

Tragic Optimism and the Importance of Maintaining Optimism Amidst Tragedy

Victor Frankel, a Holocaust survivor and psycho analyst, coined the term 'tragic optimism' which is about accepting suffering in life while maintaining a positive attitude. He believes that suffering is inevitable due to physical pain, failure of plans, and the impermanence of everything we love. Tragic optimism is not about denying or escaping tragedy, but facing it head-on with optimism. It is different from the positivity preached in the West that ignores tragedy. The Stoics, often misunderstood as pessimistic, actually exemplified tragic optimism by persevering through hardships without becoming bitter or quitting. Tragic optimism is not just about what you say, but what you do in the face of adversity.
