NOTE

The Role of Equity and Inclusion in Leadership

Equity and inclusion play a vital role in leadership. Certain systems in organizations are designed to exclude certain individuals from leadership positions. In such cultures, risk-taking and vulnerability are not encouraged, but rather used to reinforce negative stereotypes. The definition of 'the best folks' in leadership is subjective and can be influenced by power differentials based on gender, race, and ability. A diverse sample is not sufficient when writing about the application of work; co-creation with individuals who have different lived experiences is necessary. Vulnerability is crucial for innovation, creativity, trust, accountability, and ethical decision-making. Inclusion can be fostered by simply being acknowledged and looked at by the leader. In a virtual setting, leaders can reach out to quieter participants privately to encourage their participation. These seemingly small actions are fundamental leadership skills that are not always taught, but are essential.
