Alcohol is a significant contributor to global mortality, accounting for 5.3% of all deaths in 2016 and 131 million years of life lost due to premature mortality or disability. Its effect on mortality risk exceeds that of various diseases and injuries. Men bear a higher burden of alcohol-related diseases than women, with a notable impact on younger adults as well. However, consuming up to three drinks per day may not be significantly associated with all-cause mortality when compared to lifetime non-drinkers.
