NOTE

The History and Principles of Healthy Built Environments

After World War II, chemical factories in Europe were repurposed for rebuilding and introduced new chemicals into building products. Europeans got sick earlier than North Americans due to the amount of building. A multidisciplinary study was conducted to determine what makes humans thrive in the built environment. The study involved health professionals, wood scientists, psychologists, medical professionals, concerned citizens, architects, and builders. They formulated 25 principles for human health in the built environment, which differ from the green building practices in the US. The study concluded that nature is the best standard for a healthy human environment.
