When faced with danger or feeling unsafe, our subcortical nervous system takes over, leading to a trauma-triggered automatic response. This response is heavily influenced by our childhood history, manifesting as scar tissue rather than the initial wound. In relationships, we often exhibit an immature part of ourselves - an adaptive child - that distorts our behavior to conform to what was expected of us as children, rather than acting from a wise and present adult perspective.
