Protein should not be counted as a calorie source on nutrition labels because it is primarily used as a building block, not for energy. Our main sources of energy are glucose and fats. Protein is only used for energy in rare cases, such as during true starvation. It is important to consume protein, but it should be eaten in its natural form with accompanying fat.
