The Goal of Small Talk is To Be interested Rather Than Interesting

Small talk is a valuable tool for building connection and finding commonality. To strengthen small talk skills, it's important to rebrand small talk as an opportunity to be interested rather than interesting, and to approach it with curiosity. Instead of putting pressure to be super interesting, one should aim to keep the conversation moving forward by asking questions and being genuinely curious. It's also helpful to comment on things in the environment or shared experiences, and show interest by saying 'tell me more.' To gracefully exit a conversation, one can use the 'white flag' technique to signal an upcoming departure and end the conversation on a positive note.
