Evolutionary psychology would say the reason that you want to be selfless to other people is for ultimately selfish ends. I learned this amazing insight, which you may be familiar with or may not, about why we feel sympathy for people. So sympathy is investment advice. The reason being that someone that is unbelievably down on their look will be disproportionately appreciative of even the smallest amount of investment that you give to them.
