Nintendo decided not to include backwards compatibility in the Super NES to reduce costs and competitively price it at $200. By not pushing their advantage and releasing the Super NES earlier, Nintendo missed the opportunity to capitalize on their existing market and allowed the Genesis to beat them in the market. They could have been in a better position if they had been more aggressive and innovative.
