The Methionine Glycine Balance in a Steak Only Carnivore Diet
The glycine pathway relies on carbohydrate and folate for synthesis. Glycine is obtained from pyruvate, created through glycolysis. Converting serine to glycine requires unmethylated folate and a sufficient intake of folate and B12. Low carb high meat diets, like the carnivore diet, may lead to poor methionine glycine balance due to limited glycine-rich animal consumption, carbohydrate restriction, and low folate intake. Exceptions include consuming the tail of an animal.
