The Thalamic Rarticular Nucleus

Your thalamus has what are called auditory nucleatherss, collections of neurons that respond to sound waves. At the same time, your thalamus is surrounded by a kind of shell, something called the thalamic reticular nucleus. This serves as a sort of gait as to which information is allowed to pass through up to your conscious experience and which is not. And that gaiting mechanism is strongly regulated by the chemical gaba.
