NOTE

The Effects of Music on the Brain

Playing drums can be a form of meditation, getting your heart in resonance with the beat. Research suggests that improvising music lights up different parts of the brain compared to reading music. Charles Lim, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, has studied jazz musicians in an FMRI machine and found that the prefrontal cortex shuts down during improvisation while another part of the brain lights up when focusing on perfection. This shows the importance of both interest and mastery, as well as the ability to enter a flow state. Lim has also conducted similar studies comparing different types of improvisation and technical abilities.
