NOTE

Fructose is a driver of Leaky Gut

The intestine's role is to move waste through while absorbing essential nutrients. Intestinal epithelial cells form tight junction proteins to create an impermeable barrier. Fructose disrupts these proteins, making the barrier temporarily permeable, leading to leaky gut. In celiac disease, zonulin, a tight junction protein, is defective. Altering the phosphorylation or nitrate status of tight junction proteins can make them permeable. Ultimately, fructose is a driver of leaky gut by compromising the integrity of the intestinal barrier.
