Most people are oblivious to how social media platforms and tools are changing us. We are captivated by the conveniences they offer, but the darker side is becoming evident. Twitter is no longer fun, and many of us feel compelled to use these tools for fear of being replaced. Despite knowing the negative impact on our self-esteem, we are more afraid not to use them. We create idealized versions of ourselves and perform different identities, even fetishizing the perfect body or projecting onto our children. While the crises we face as a society grow, the space for self-change narrows. We must shift our focus from building personal brands to collective projects that address political and social issues. We have limited time, and if we spend most of it on self-optimization, we miss the opportunity to organize and empower ourselves for greater change.
