The rise of nationalism in the 19th and early 20th centuries presented a significant existential threat to the Ottoman Empire, particularly in the Balkans, where numerous independence movements emerged. Beginning with Greece's uprising in the 1820s and culminating with Albania's declaration of independence in 1913, nearly every Christian-majority territory in the Balkans sought to break free from Ottoman rule. This trend reflected the broader impact of Enlightenment ideas on nationalist sentiments, leading to the gradual loss of Ottoman European territories, with only a small part of Thrace remaining by the eve of World War I.
