In the early days of a company, it is important to communicate the value proposition, and stories are a crucial tool for this. The anecdote about the late fee for a pull, the idea of gym memberships, and the convoluted story about the business model all serve the purpose of explaining the company's business model and the opportunity to be found. Although the stories may seem exaggerated, there's nothing wrong with this approach. In the context of Netflix, Reed Hastings and Mark Randolph, who worked together at a company called Pure Atria, understood the importance of storytelling and value communication.
