The Stalemate of Weakness
Around two million people in Burkina Faso have been displaced due to the fighting, which accounts for about 10% of the population. The jihadists have besieged up to 20 cities and towns with high civilian casualties. Despite the jihadists' strong presence in the countryside, they face difficulty in taking control of cities which remain under the state's authority. This has led to a stalemate situation where neither the jihadists nor the state can overpower the other due to their weaknesses. The prolonged conflict seems to persist as neither side can achieve victory through military means.
