Innovation often stems from individuals working on multiple projects simultaneously, exploring various technologies and collaborating with different groups. Contrary to the common belief of following a linear development process, success in innovation comes from allowing individuals autonomy and freedom in their work. Larry Tesla's approach at ATG, where people were hired, paid well, and given independence, resulted in a culture where individuals could prototype, fail, and eventually work together to create successful end products, be it software, hardware, or a combination of both.
