Seven executive functions identified in 2022 serve as crucial mechanisms for effective ADHD management. These functions include self-awareness, which acts as a cognitive mirror reflecting personal strengths and weaknesses, and helps in scheduling tasks according to individual cognitive peaks. Inhibition functions as a mental brake, enabling individuals to pause and think before reacting. Nonverbal working memory involves visual and sensory processing to enhance problem-solving; contrasted with verbal working memory, which focuses on language-based thought. Emotional self-control is essential for managing both positive and negative feelings, while self-motivation fuels persistence, especially during less enjoyable tasks. Planning and problem-solving enable imaginative scenario exploration, akin to a sandbox for creative thinking. Recommendations for enhancing these executive functions provide practical guidelines for better managing ADHD-related challenges.
Cheryl Chase, Ph.D., helps professionals with ADHD and employers understand how ADHD impacts work life and shares self-management techniques, accommodations, and organizational strategies that will lead to career success.
