The city of Clement made critical mistakes that left it vulnerable to imperial soldiers. They signed a truce but dismissed mercenaries before the soldiers arrived, making the city defenseless. Additionally, when the imperial armies breached the walls from different areas, the bridges connecting the port of the city with famous landmarks were not cut, providing invaders with free access. The absence of a general to stop atrocities and the open passage led to chaos, with soldiers running rampant, looting, and inflicting harm for ransom and torture. The lack of resistance allowed them to reach the smallest convent, and price lists for captives from a cardinal's household further illustrate the brutality and systematic approach of the invaders.
