Plant Behavior

In the 1850s and 1860s, a botanist named Andre Femenzen discovered light-driven plant behavior by observing single-celled green algie. He noticed that when light shone from the side, the green tinge in a saucer of water would move to a specific distance from the light. Further investigation revealed that the algie had flagella and were swimming towards the right light level. This finding has been instrumental in understanding animal behavior. The algie achieve this behavior through a single gene and a single protein on the surface of their cells.
