NOTE

Gate Control Theory of Pain and Pain Reduction Techniques

The Gate Control Theory of Pain, developed by Patrick Wall and Ron Melzak in the 1960s, explains that pain perception is not solely determined by signals from nociceptors to the brain, but also involves inhibitory pathways from the brain to the spinal cord and touch fibers known as abata fibers. Pain reduction techniques such as rubbing, light touch, swearing, and kissing have been shown to be effective in reducing pain. These techniques activate touch fibers and modify the connections in the spinal cord, leading to a reduction in nociceptive signals and an overall decrease in pain perception.
