The Nature of Consciousness and the Role of Reality Monitoring
Consciousness is shaped by the brain's model of the external world. Perceptual representations become conscious when they are seen as reliable reflections of reality through internal reality monitoring. This allows us to distinguish between external reality and internal simulations or imaginations. Imagination can sometimes fool the monitoring system, leading to a conscious experience. The constant monitoring of the perceptual model determines our conscious experience.
