The Role of Incentives in Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity in adults can be as significant as in young individuals if there is a strong incentive for change. The level of importance we attribute to a task determines the speed and extent of neuroplasticity. Merely going through the motions is inadequate for brain changes. Studies show that achieving a goal tied to survival or income can rapidly reshape the nervous system. The brain has a remarkable ability to change quickly and extensively at any age if the change is deemed crucial.
