The Interconnected Relationship Between the Microbiome and Mental Health
The microbiome significantly influences brain function by producing neurotransmitter precursors, influencing brain development and function, and affecting the way hormones influence thoughts and emotions. The brain and the microbiome communicate constantly through the vagus nerve and enteric nervous system, and their evolution is closely linked, potentially leading to consequences for brain development if the microbiome does not evolve correctly. At the end of life, neuroinflammation may explain neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia. Maintaining a healthy brain requires a healthy microbiome, and vice versa. Additionally, the microbiome may impact our hormones and may even affect our dating lives by influencing attributes associated with beauty or attractiveness.
