Our brains prioritize safety and salience, focusing on what feels salient to our day-to-day experiences, especially regarding thoughts and emotions. Safety takes precedence, allowing us to pay attention to other things only when we feel safe. Negative events or trauma become salient as our brains aim to keep us safe, while less important bodily functions remain in the background unless there's a risk associated with them.
