Excessive attention might actually, or excessive focus, if you want, might actually lead to stress. Focus should be relaxed. It shouldn't be tense. So if you're doing a focus in the right way, you wouldn't increase tension. You actually might increase relaxation. The wandering mind is an unhappy mind where i found correlated with depression, yes. But there are parts and a sort of praying the devil's advocate here.
