HIIT: Strengthening the Heart for Greater Performance

Engaging in high-intensity interval training (HIIT) causes an increase in heart rate and blood circulation, which enhances oxygen utilization in muscles. Over time, this leads to the expansion of capillary beds and eccentric loading of the heart's muscular walls, specifically the left ventricle, which strengthens the cardiac muscle rather than thickening it overall. As blood return to the heart increases, the muscle adapts by becoming stronger, resulting in greater stroke volume; the heart can pump more blood per beat. This improvement allows for the delivery of more glucose and oxygen to muscles, enhancing performance and enabling increased work output over time. Regular exercise, especially HIIT, can lower resting heart rates due to the increased efficiency of the heart's output, showcasing the benefits of sustained high-intensity training.
