Cleaning Up: Leadership in an Age of Climate Change

NOTE

Hydrogen Production Must Align with Economic Viability

Hydrogen can be produced and stored, but economic challenges persist. The intermittent nature of renewable energy, like wind farms, limits the feasibility of running electrolyzers consistently for cost-effective hydrogen production. If a wind farm generates surplus electricity but operates intermittently, the potential to produce hydrogen economically is severely restricted. In extreme cases, only a fraction of the total energy generated can be utilized efficiently for electrolysis. Consequently, pursuing smaller scale, system-friendly approaches to producing cheap hydrogen using leftover energy is unlikely to succeed. Instead, integrating heat, electricity, and hydrogen into a cohesive system presents more viable economic options for hydrogen production.
