Vitamin D is more than just important for bone metabolism. Supplementing with 2000 international units of vitamin D daily over five years has been shown to reduce autoimmune conditions like psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. Spending less time in the sun can lead to vitamin D deficiency, which may present as more subtle symptoms. Light's effect on illness, wound healing, and COVID-19 is likely related to the production of melatonin and immunomodulation by vitamin D. A study found that mortality from COVID-19 was higher in areas further north, where people receive less sunlight and vitamin D. This suggests that sunlight has additional benefits beyond vitamin D, possibly related to oxidative stress. Sunlight may improve mitochondrial function and melatonin production, leading to better outcomes in COVID-19 patients.
