Validating Target Learning in Therapeutic Process
In therapeutic processes, therapists are instructed to never correct, refute, or invalidate the target learning of the client, as it can trigger an emotional and analytical diversion. This approach differs significantly from cognitive behavioral therapy. Trying to correct or invalidate the learning can lead to the client's emotional mind resuppressing the target learning. Instead, therapists should fully welcome and empathize with the contradictory knowledge and target learning to set up a more effective process. By validating both the target learning and contradictory knowledge, therapists can facilitate a different emotional and analytical process that aligns with re-consolidation principles.
