The Science of Stability: Homeostasis and Allostasis

For the past 150 years, the prevailing model of change has been homeostasis, which says that systems crave stability. However, a new model called allostasis suggests that healthy systems actually thrive on stability through change. This means that instead of constantly returning to the same order, systems adapt and find stability in new ways. The words themselves reflect this: homeostasis means same standing, while allostasis means stability through change.
