The moon was formed about 4.4 billion years ago due to a massive impact between a planet and the early Earth. The energy from this collision vaporized the rocks of both planets, leaving behind a large cloud of gas and magma. As this cloud cooled, the vapor condensed into droplets of magma that fell back to Earth as torrential rain, eventually clumping together to form the Moon. The rest of the rocky gas cloud contracted to become the Earth. In a dramatic moment, the Moon emerged from the Earth's gas cloud as a newly born satellite, beginning to orbit the Earth, according to the Giant Impact Theory of Moon Formation.
